Tapeechoeffectswereinventedtowardstheendofthe
fifties.Presumablytheveryfirsttapeechomachinewas
inventedbyCharlieWatkinsofLondon,England,in1958.It
wasbasedonasmallloopof1/4"tapeontowhichaudiowas
recordedbyamagneticheadandthenreadbythree
separatedheads.Whatwasreadfromthetapewasamplified
bytheinternalall-valvecircuitandeventuallyrecorded
backtothetape,creatingthefeedbackor"sustaining"
echoeffect.Thedelaytimeoftheunitwasdeterminedby
distanceofthewriteheadfromthereadheads,in
conjunctionwiththespeedofthetape.Manymanufacturers
ofthiseraproducedtheirversionsofechomachines,
mostlybasedonthemagnetictapesystem.ThefamousBinson
Echorecwasbasedonacirculardrumheadwithametallic
magneticstripe.ItwasusedbyPinkFloydatthetimeof
theiralbum"Echoes".Anotherfamoustapeechomachinewas
theMaestroEchoplex,heavilyusedbypianistHerbie
Hancock.OthernotableunitsweretheSelmerTruVoiceEcho,
theDynacordEchocord,alongoneofthemostfamousand
widelyusedfrom1973topresentday:theRolandRE-201.
Thisparticularmodelhasatapeloopabout4meterslong
whichisrecorded,readanderasedcontinuously.It
consistsofoneerasehead,onewriteheadandthree
pick-upheads,whichwhencombinedwiththevariablespeed
DCcapstanmotorallowsmanydifferentdelay
configurations.Thismachinealsooffersareverberation
effectbasedonaspringreverbtank.Thecombinationof
echoandreverbgivesan"ethereal"ambienceeffectwhich
ventuallyinspiredtheengineerssotonameit"SpaceEcho".
Nowadaysthesemachinesareverysoughtafterbutquite
raretofindonthemarket,andtheirevaluationincreases
yearafteryear.Therearemanyaspectsthatmakethetape
echostandoutfromamoderndigitaldelay.Hereareafew
ofthemainfeatures:
1)theunpredictability.Acapstanmotorisneverperfect
likeadigitalclocksignal,resultinginslightvariations
ofthedelaytimesandpitchedsound.
2)thefrequencyresponseanddynamicrange.Amagnetic
tapeisnotascleanandflatasadigitalrecording.
Especiallyaloopoftapewhichiscyclicallyerasedand
re-recordedmanytimesinashorttimelapse.
3)noise,hum,distortion.Defectsthatadigitalsystem
shouldn'thave,sometimesarewantedandcanbecome
"musicallyacceptable".
